Atlas Awards 2016-2017 Season


HS Sports Insider, together with Stephen Wade Auto Center and ESPN Sports Radio 97.7 present Southern Utah’s 1st Annual Atlas Awards Ceremony meant to recognize stand out athletes across the region for their Athletic Talent, Leadership and Academic Success. Recognizing over 120 athletes from across seven high schools with six coming from Region 9 and Canyon View High School in Cedar City, Utah, who will be returning to Region 9 next fall, as the seventh school highlighted that evening.

The morning of the awards ceremony began with with a Golf Tournament/Fundraiser at the Southgate Golf Course in St George, Utah for event sponsors.  Participants competed for various prizes in an effort to raise funds for local high school athletic scholarships. Stephen Wade Auto Center provided the Mercedes Benz CLA250 for the Hole-in-One as well as Camping World of St George who enticed golf participants with a trailer for a second Hole-in-One which certainly increased the level of excitement and fun for all involved. While no one took home the coveted prize all 120+ golfers enjoyed their time on the course.

This was truly a night to remember, from the speakers, to the awards, lights, sounds and music, the regions 1st Annual Atlas Awards, was a tremendous success. Along with the many athletes recognized, awards were presented to those outstanding teachers and coaches who have made positive impact on the in the classroom and on the field from each of the high schools recognized.

Some of the awards presented that evening were:

To begin the evening, Region 9 Champions, Desert Hills Tempest Line, performed for the attendees followed by Snow Canyon High School’s Elle Anderson (sophomore) and Mandee Rodgers (junior) who together gave a powerful rendition our National Anthem. Pine View High School’s own Kambria Johnston (senior) gave an inspiring student athlete address on leadership and what it means to be an influence for good as well as how to use their popularity as athletes to stand up against bullying.

ESPN Sports Radio 97.7FM’s own Devin Dixon was the Master of Ceremonies and had the pleasure of handing out several awards throughout the evening.  Brennen Ames from Intermountian St George Acceleration was also present to hand out several training scholarships to male and female athletes across the region along with presenting the Male and Female Pursuit of Excellence Awards for the region.

Owner and CEO of HS Sports Insider, HS Sports Insider Events and Atlas Awards, Joe Olivas, was present and delivered the keynote address for the evening on what it means to be a champion, stating from the stage that “Champions don’t show up to get everything they want; they show up to give everything they have. To each of the student athletes recognized this evening we say thank you for all of the exciting moments you’ve give us throughout the year.”

To help close out the evening 2X Defending State Champions, Dixie Jetettes took the floor and kicked off the nights entertainment with a live concert featuring James the Mormon.

We appreciate your vision and effort and all that you continue to do to help recognize the young men and women of Southern Utah.” – Gabriel Sewell, father of Nephi Sewell, recent signee to the University of Nevada and this seasons Atlas Awards Male Athlete of the year.


Nikki Heaton, mother of recently signed DSU Trailblazer and defensive lineman, Tyler Heaton, stated after the event via social media; “Thank you HS Sports Insider Magazine, for a great night of Awards and celebrating our region 9 athletes!”

Fellow Pine View athlete and soon to be Trailblazer, Noah Schone, this seasons Atlas Awards Record Breaking Athlete of the year also shared his thoughts and appreciation for the evening, ”Shoutout to HS Sports Insider for the amazing Atlas Awards yesterday! Thank you for the award.”

When it is all said and done, we at HS Sports Insider ultimately want thosewithin the communities where our publication can be found to learn about the incredible and talented student athletes in those areas. By doing so, we hope that we can serve as a vehicle to draw collegiate attention to the areas in which our publications are featured with the goal of garnering even greater exposure and athletic scholarships for our student athletes. As we grow and expand into Idaho, Arizona and Nevada we seek to replicate the success we have achieved in Southern Utah in featuring great young men and women across the mid-west through HS Sports Insider Magazine as well as the Atlas Awards.

A complete list of athletes who were recognized during the Atlas Awards which have also been chosen to be featured in issues of HS Sports Insider Magazine by their Principals, Athletic Directors, Coaches and or Peers covering the 2016-2017 Season as those who represent their sport through hard work, leadership, commitment, and dedication to their athletics and academics.
